Council Statement on Migrants at the Border

On behalf of the Order of Ecumenical Franciscans we want to express our compassion and deep concerns as we observe the continual tragedy unfolding at the U.S./Mexico border. As Franciscans, we strongly oppose any and all mistreatment of those seeking to enter the U.S. Likewise, we firmly oppose the continued separation of children from their parents. We recognize the deep trauma that this inflicts. We call for the their reunification.

As this crisis continues, from Advent, Christmas, Lent and now past Easter, we can not allow those who are trapped in this chaos to be forgotten. May, many of us then continue to work diligently and sacrificially to provide protection, assistance and humanitarian aid for migrants, refugees and those seeking asylum. We are heartened by all your efforts and the work that will continue in love.

We see in you the love of Christ. A love that is overcoming and sustaining. A love that looks each person in the eye and treats each person with dignity. A love that enters into pain and suffering and tirelessly accompanies.

We call ourselves Christians. We call ourselves Franciscans. In the words of Jesus,” Whatever you did to one of the least of these sisters and brothers of mine, you did to me.” (Matt. 25:40) In the words of Francis, “I have done what was mine to do. May Christ now teach you what is yours to do.”
This is a call to follow the One we claim to follow – to love as we have been loved.

This is a call to prayer. This is a call to action.
