Advent Reflection #4

Today’s reading (O.T and Gospel) had a common message, there is good news. In our world at this time there is a need to hear that there is some good news.

When I was 6 years old I was in the annual Christmas play, like  so many of you all. Do you remember the part you played? Like Jacoba I too had those negative experiences as a teenager, but I did have a powerful positive experience with the Christmas play. Now, at first I did not want to be in the play, but I changed my mind.  I said I would be interested in being a shepherd, I was of course living on a farm, so that seemed like a natural role for me. But no, I could not have that part.

Now, can you see me as an angel? Well, I was the angel who announced to the shepherd’s that there was good news. For me that role gave me confidence. But the message was often challenged by the negative and shaming and guilt messages that so many churches/congregations were teaching. The good news that was announced that God is with us was so often missing. The good news was that God is love and there were days I never saw it. And still today.

Love is powerful, nurturing, healing, a change maker. We are called to practice love each day. Sounds easy but often is hard. Often we just need to take a step forward and the love act becomes easier.

We are called to love our neighbors, our enemies, one another. A simple directive. This covers all and all means all. Love means being in right relationship, being respectful, being affirming, being present. Love is the good news. God is with us and among us. God so loved the world. How much clearer does good news need to be? The world is waiting for this love. Where will we be in the proclaiming of the good news?

Today’s reading calls us to give when there is a need, to be ethical and just. Our readings promised that One was coming to free us from bondage, oppression, to heal us. and to give us a home. Jesus is love and this is good news for all of us.

Peace and all good,

Markie
